Meet at 9:15am - Hike steps off at 9:30am
For the past 20 Years Joe Tag has led us on the Annual Schunemunk Mountain hike and for this so many of us are grateful for his leadership, enthusiasm and of course, his cookies! Well with Joe deciding it's time to pass the torch, Mark Mintz, David Dvorin and Tom Nucatola are going to try and keep this tradition alive. This year will mark the 21st Annual Schunemunk Hike for WASC members and guests (amazing!). This hike is considered "moderate" however, it should be considered strenuous and you should be in relatively good health and condition. Good hiking boots are a must.
What you need to bring
Daypack containing your lunch, at least 2 liters of water, extra warm clothing, and rainwear. Good hiking boots strongly recommended.
What you need to know
Note: This is a strenuous 8-mile hike. It is not especially difficult, but you should be in good physical condition. There are no chairlifts! You’ll be rewarded with fabulous views, interesting geology, and beautiful fall colors as we walk along Schunemunk’s rocky ridge. Expect the hike to take six hours. Stormy weather will cancel or postpone.
Where you need to go
Take I-87 New York Thruway, keeping right to Exit 16 (Harriman). Proceed west on N.Y. Route 17 to Exit 130, and continue north on N.Y. Route 208 for 2.7 miles. Just beyond the Blooming Grove Plaza shopping center, bear right at the fork onto Clove Road (County Route 27). In 4.4 miles, turn right onto Otterkill Road and proceed for 0.7 mile to a trailhead parking area on the left side of the road.
Please register here online so we will know you'll be there!
