It's the beginning of March and there's plenty of skiing left. But it is time to start planning for the summer months. Many inquiries concerning WASC summer activities have been coming my way from new members. During the 15 years I've been a member of WASC, some summers were filled with organized events while others were filled with a flurry of ideas that somehow never materialized. Let's plan now for more formalized summer opportunities.

In the past, members congregated for a weekly bowling league that was thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated. Also, a weekend golf outing at a resort, camping excursions, and white water rafting adventures served as summer recreation in place of skiing. Other activities included park picnics with organized volleyball, softball, relays, and barbecues. Monthly social meetings at the Elks Club helped people keep in touch.

New ideas are also welcome. Many of us bike or would like to venture into the sport. There are many organized biking opportunities that WASC could participate in as a group. Other suggestions include fishing trips on a party boat, hiking the mountains, a day at the race track, relaxing on a local beach, snorkeling and scuba diving, water skiing, boating, or even (for those of stronger mettle) skydiving.

We have many new and veteran members with innovative ideas. As our summer Open House approaches on April 1, this is our chance to come together with plans in mind for activities, people to run them, and the recruiting of participants. This is your chance to help develop a really strong summer program that equals our winter one.

Besides setting up summer activities, the Summer Open House can have another purpose. Many of you have ski items (accessories, boot bags, outgrown clothing, etc.) that other members may find useful. We will have a swap to help recycle these items. Items can also be donated to the Special Olympics. Bring these items with you that night along with your ideas for activities.

The Banquet, scheduled for May 15, should not be the end of the ski season but a transition to the next season of the year, summer. WASC has a long tradition of enjoying nature and being active. Physical activity is beneficial to both the mind and body. It keeps us psychologically satisfied and helps conditioning to be ready to meet the next ski season. Our" founding fathers" knew this secret and kept active all year long.

In the spirit of WASC, come out in April 1st to help develop plans for continuing physical and mental health. Attend the Banquet as a graduation into the new season. Finally, enjoy the summer activities you helped set in motion. And before you know it, it will be time to ski again!!!
