Trail Heads
Chris and I got a call a few weeks ago from former members Noel and Stephen Crawford. They had found the elusive rail trail down on the Jersey shore and invited us to join them for an outing. For those that don't know, a rail trail is an old unused railroad bed that has been paved over for use as a bike trail and footpath. We had heard rumors about one around the Keyport area, but no one, not even the local bike shop, had any hard information about it.
The trailhead, it turns out, is in Aberdeen just east of the Parkway. We all parked across the street in the Little League lot and started pedaling down what is officially known as the Henry Hudson Trail.
The trail runs for about ten miles from Aberdeen south to the Atlantic Highlands marina. It is a very nice leisurely ride, almost totally flat, running essentially through several towns, past lots of back yards, a couple of very interesting pubs and restaurants, and with plenty of opportunity to deviate toward the ocean.
The day was rather cool and windy, so the clam chowder at the marina really hit the spot. We toured around all the boats on cradles, checked out the casino (from the outside), and headed back. On the way, we made the mistake of stopping off at a thrift shop in an old convent. Neither Steven nor I could get the ladies moving, so he and I decided to relax over my usual backpack fare - Vermont cheddar and pâté on German black bread washed down with a round of Broken Legs. That got the girls out!
We'll be going back. The Henry Hudson Trail is an excellent way to explore the shore towns on wheels rather than behind the wheel.
